How Freddie Freeman worked through his early-season slump Los Angeles Times

house whip

The whip keeps track of all legislation and ensures that all party members are present when important measures are to be voted upon. Five activities illustrate how minority leaders seek to accomplish this primary goal. Since 1995, the only two Majority Leaders to become Speaker are John Boehner and Kevin McCarthy, though indirectly as their party lost control in the 2006 and 2018 midterm elections. Boehner subsequently served as House Minority Leader from 2007 to 2011, and McCarthy served from 2019 to 2023. Both were elected Speaker when the House reconvened after gaining a majority in their respective midterm elections.

What is a Representative?

The bill has an almost zero chance of passing the Democratic controlled Senate, and Biden has vowed to veto the legislation if it reaches his desk. The makeup of the Rules Committee has traditionally been weighted in favor of the majority party, and has been in its current configuration of 9 majority and 4 minority members since the late 1970s. The House is one of Congress’s two chambers (the other is the U.S. Senate), and part of the federal government’s legislative branch.

Current floor leaders

This means ensuring that members of the party vote according to the party platform, rather than according to their own individual ideology or the will of their donors or constituents. They work to ensure that their fellow political party legislators attend voting sessions and vote according to their party's official policy. Members who vote against party policy may "lose the whip", being effectively expelled from the party.

Leadership

When asked whether he expected a motion to vacate — a rarely used procedural tool to remove the House speaker — Johnson did not respond and continued to walk to the floor. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise doesn't think Johnson is going to lose his job due to putting the foreign aid package on the floor, which was advanced by the help of Democrats. If you suspect that you or a loved one might one day end up in a nursing home, and you breathed a sigh of relief when the Biden administration announced increased staffing requirements on April 22, you may need to pull a Larry David and curb your enthusiasm. So grill up some burgers, grab a brewskie and make your own fireworks by breaking the sound barrier. You'll be the talk of the neighborhood at your fourth of July gathering! These whips are also waxed after completion, giving them a protective layer from moisture and a professional finish.

The majority party members and the minority party members meet separately to select their leaders. Third parties rarely have had enough members to elect their own leadership, and independents will generally join one of the larger party organizations to receive committee assignments. The floor leaders and whips of each party are elected by their respective parties in a closed-door caucus by secret ballot.[3] The Speaker-presumptive is assumed to be the incoming Speaker, although not formally selected to be nominated for Speaker by the majority party's caucus. After this period, the Speaker-designate is also chosen in a closed-door session by the largest caucus although the Speaker is formally elevated to the position by a public vote of the entire House when Congress reconvenes. Another scholar contends that the minority leader position emerged even before 1883.

Geraint Davies, the MP for Swansea West, was suspended from the whip in June 2023 after a report in Politico documented a series of allegations of sexual harassment against him. Davies said at the time that he did not recognise the claims, but apologised if he had “inadvertently caused offence to anyone”. Their number doesn’t include half a dozen or so more MPs who have either resigned under a cloud or been ejected from parliament in byelections after scandals in the past year. These include the former Tory MPs Scott Benton and Peter Bone, both of whom quit the Commons in recent months after parliamentary investigations found they had breached misconduct rules.

house whip

Labour’s long-serving former chief whip was suspended from the party in September 2022 after a formal complaint. Nick Brown, the MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East, announced his resignation from the party in December 2023 and called the disciplinary process involving him “a complete farce”. In the past 10 days, two Conservative MPs have lost the party whip over misconduct allegations. William Wragg and Mark Menzies bolster the ranks of what has become the fourth largest “party” in the Commons – the independents. The attempt to oust Johnson comes just months after former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed from the top leadership post in early October.

Additionally, the term "whip" may mean the voting instructions issued to legislators,[1] or the status of a certain legislator in their party's parliamentary grouping. After supporting the March 2017 version of the American Health Care Act (a bill to repeal the ACA), he voted for it on May 4, 2017, before it had been scored by the Congressional Budget Office to determine its economic impact. Congress has created a wide variety of temporary and permanent commissions to serve as advisory bodies for investigative or policy-related issues, or to carry out administrative, interparliamentary, or commemorative tasks. Such commissions are typically created by either law or House resolution, and may be composed of House members, private citizens, or a mix of both. In some cases, the commissions are entities of the House or Congress itself; in other cases, they are crafted as independent entities within the legislative branch. The House will sometimes form a special or select committee for a short time period and specific purpose, frequently an investigation.

Party leaders of the United States House of Representatives

They are reckoned as the third-ranking member of their party behind the Speaker and the Majority Leader. From an institutional perspective, the rules of the House assign a number of specific responsibilities to the minority leader. The minority leader also has other institutional duties, such as appointing individuals to certain federal entities. The Minority Whip is a member of the minority party who assists the minority leader in coordinating the party caucus in its responses to legislation and other matters. They are reckoned as the second most powerful member of their party, behind the minority leader. The minority party offers strong opposition to majority party initiatives but does not counter with policy alternatives of their own.

The Committee of the Whole House is a committee of the House on which all representatives serve and which meets in the House Chamber for the consideration of measures from the Union calendar. The House’s standing committees have different legislative jurisdictions. Each considers bills and issues and recommends measures for consideration by the House.

The overall objectives are to develop a coordinated communications strategy, to share ideas and information, and to present a united front on issues. Minority leaders also make floor speeches and close debate on major issues before the House; they deliver addresses in diverse forums across the country, and they write books or articles that highlight minority party goals and achievements. The assistant majority leader and assistant minority leader of the House, commonly called whips, are the second-ranking members of each party's leadership.

The number of voting representatives in the House is fixed by law at no more than 435, proportionally representing the population of the 50 states. Nolan D. McCaskill is a former staff writer who covered Congress for the Los Angeles Times. Before joining The Times in September 2021, he spent nearly seven years at Politico, where he covered breaking news, Congress, the Trump White House, the 2020 Democratic presidential primary and race and policy.

All committees have websites where they post information about the legislation they are drafting. Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution provides for both the minimum and maximum sizes for the House of Representatives. Currently, there are five delegates representing the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The delegates and resident commissioner possess the same powers as other members of the House, except that they may not vote when the House is meeting as the House of Representatives. Now McCarthy is in the fight of his political life as he again seeks the speakership. He won the party’s internal leadership elections, dispatching a challenge from the far right. But the real test will come on the House floor, where he will need the support of nearly every member of his caucus to become speaker.

Find Your Representative

On Tuesday night, the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee voted unanimously to grant Pelosi the honorific title of speaker emerita. Democrats say their new leadership team is reflective of America’s diversity. He was named to the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol and led the panel’s high-profile third hearing, which focused on Trump’s efforts to pressure his vice-president, Mike Pence, to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Rep. Mike Johnson

The main function of the majority and minority whips is to gather votes of their respective parties on major issues. In addition, the minority leader has a number of other institutional functions. Informally, the minority leader maintains ties with majority party leaders to learn about the schedule and other House matters and forges agreements or understandings with them insofar as feasible. In the Senate, the majority whip is the third-highest ranking individual in the majority party (the party with the most seats).

join the team

When Trump was defeated in 2020, McCarthy amplified his election lies. After the January 6 attack on the Capitol, McCarthy condemned Trump’s actions but quickly retreated and made amends. McCarthy, 57, has been plotting his path to the speakership for the better part of a decade.

That group of octogenarians will continue their service into the next Congress, though only Clyburn wants to remain in leadership. But he’s facing an eleventh-hour challenge for the post of assistant Democratic leader from Rhode Island’s Rep. David Cicilline, who announced a surprise bid Wednesday. He was considered next in line for the speakership in 2015, but his bid imploded. McCarthy was eventually elected minority leader in 2018, after Democrats won the House.

The purposes of obstruction are several, such as frustrating the majority party's ability to govern or attracting press and media attention to the alleged ineffectiveness of the majority party. "We know how to delay," remarked Minority Leader Gephardt.[40] Dilatory motions to adjourn, appeals of the presiding officer's ruling, or numerous requests for roll call votes are standard time-consuming parliamentary tactics. By stalling action on the majority party's agenda, the minority leader may be able to launch a campaign against a "do-nothing Congress" and convince enough voters to put his party back in charge of the House. To be sure, the minority leader recognizes that "going negative" carries risks and may not be a winning strategy if his party fails to offer policy alternatives that appeal to broad segments of the general public. Like the Speaker of the House, the Minority Leaders are typically experienced lawmakers when they win election to this position.

He won the Brooklyn and Queens-based seat, parts of which were once represented by Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress. When Trump announced his intention to run again for the White House in 2024, Stefanik was one of only a handful of prominent Republicans to endorse him, a move that rankled those in her party wary of his attempts at a political comeback. Democrats meanwhile will begin the next Congress with a fresh slate of leaders, after the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and her deputies stepped aside to pave the way for a new generation. Now, in a historical first, the triumvirate of top House Democrats includes no white men.

The last such set of forecasts, released in March, showed the typical Fed official at the time was penciling in three cuts for 2024. Tesla was also a big force pushing upward on the market and jumped 15.3%. Its chief executive, Elon Musk, met with a high-ranking Chinese official as it tries to rev up sales in the world’s largest automobile market. Domino’s Pizza added to the pile Monday, reporting stronger-than-expected results thanks to a second straight quarter of rising orders for deliveries and carryout.

Sky News understands there has been an investigation ongoing by Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ) since the allegations were first raised but further information came to light yesterday and Mr Hart acted immediately. William Wragg voluntarily relinquished the Tory whip earlier this month after confessing to handing over colleagues’ personal phone numbers to someone he met on a dating app. Wragg said he feared this person, who is suspected of targeting more than a dozen men in Westminster in a honeytrap operation, had compromising material on him. Bob Stewart, the MP for Beckenham, surrendered the Tory whip in November while he appealed against a conviction for a racially aggravated public order offence. His conviction was quashed on appeal in February, but he has not yet had the whip restored.

Both houses of Congress, the House of Representatives and Senate, have majority and minority whips. While members of Congress often vote along party lines, the influence of the whip is weaker than in the UK system; American politicians have considerably more freedom to diverge from the party line and vote according to their conscience or their constituents' preferences. One reason is that a considerable amount of money is raised by individual candidates.

house whip

House leadership includes the speaker, majority and minority leaders, assistant leaders, whips and a party caucus or conference. The speaker acts as leader of the House and combines several institutional and administrative roles. Majority and minority leaders represent their respective parties on the House floor. Whips assist leadership in managing their party's legislative program on the House floor. A party caucus or conference is the name given to a meeting of or organization of all party members in the House. A look at one minority leadership strategy—partisan opposition—may suggest why it might be employed in specific circumstances.

Dymaxion House Fuller, R Buckminster Richard Buckminster, 1895-1983

dymaxion house

At a time where there is a global housing crisis, many of the world’s greatest minds have brainstormed to find a way to have mass produced homes that are inexpensive, portable, and sustainable. Given the past 70 years of improvements in technology and materials, perhaps the world is finally ready for Buckminster Fuller’s retro-future architecture. This house, his re-thinking of human shelter, was rooted in Fuller's understanding of industrial production -- particularly methods developed in the automobile industry and especially those advocated by Henry Ford for whom Fuller had immense admiration.

For the Fly's Eye Dome – Fuller's final prototype for low-cost portable housing of the future – he aimed to reduce the structural weight of the dwelling. The result comprises transparent bubble windows across a partial sphere made from fibreglass. An exhibit celebrating the work of late American architect-inventor Richard Buckminster Fuller opens in Los Angeles next week. Here's eight of his futuristic designs, including "autonomous" prefab houses with bulging windows, an underwater island and a pared-back rowing boat. Fuller believed human societies would soon rely mainly on renewable sources of energy, such as solar- and wind-derived electricity. He hoped for an age of "omni-successful education and sustenance of all humanity".

Fuller, R. Buckminster (Richard Buckminster), 1895-19831945

Fuller designed several versions of the house at different times—all of them factory manufactured kits, assembled on site, intended to be suitable for any site or environment and to use resources efficiently. The Geodesic Dome is a key example of Fuller's ambitions to make the most with minimum resources. A series of triangular elements distribute the stress of weight across the lightweight lattice structures, which are able to withstand heavy loads and harsh conditions, and provide free open space inside. Fuller spent much of his youth on Bear Island, in Penobscot Bay off the coast of Maine.

Architect-designed furniture

Fuller, along with co-cartographer Shoji Sadao, also designed an alternative projection map, called the Dymaxion map. This was designed to show Earth's continents with minimum distortion when projected or printed on a flat surface. Buckminster Fuller was a Unitarian, and, like his grandfather Arthur Buckminster Fuller (brother of Margaret Fuller),[40][41] a Unitarian minister. Fuller adapted the later units of the grain-silo house to use this effect. Weekly updates on the latest design and architecture vacancies advertised on Dezeen Jobs.

Earlier this year our conservation staff disassembled a large portion of the house’s floor to repair damage and take measures that will allow the structure to safely accommodate continued heavy traffic. Obviously it is not unusual for museum artifacts to have spent more time in preservation than original use, but it is sobering to realize just how little time Fuller’s concept was prototyped—no more than a few months—and how heavily used it now is. The 4D House was introduced to the public in 1929 when it was featured in a modernist furniture exhibition put on by the Marshall Fields in Chicago. Waldo Warren, a Public Relations specialist for Marshall Fields, seeking a catchier name for the 4D house worked with Fuller to coin a new name which better described  Fuller’s ideas behind his invention. Combining a series of keywords the two came up with the words dynamic, maximum, and tension to describe the tensioned cables which supported the structure.

Housing

A painstaking process was used to conserve as many original component parts and systems as possible and restore the rest using original documentation from the Fuller prototyping process. It was installed indoors in the Henry Ford Museum in 2001 with a full exhibit. Inspired by his 1927 idea for a mass produced house, the Dymaxion House built in 1946 in Wichita, Kansas, was meant to be easily shipped and constructed. It utilized surplus material from World War II, namely aluminum, and could withstand a Kansas tornado. It’s considered one of the most cost-effective houses ever designed as its 1,100 square feet with two bedrooms had a greywater system to reduce water use, and was heated and cooled naturally, all costing about the same as a nice car. Due to its material it required little maintenance, and a downdraft ventilation from the central support even cut down the need for vacuuming.

dymaxion house

The nude model on the model bed in this model Dymaxion House was considered a bit scandalous in 1929, as she demonstrated the precise climate control of the Dymaxion House while also attracting attention to the model house. From historic images to vivid descriptions, a record of rich detail is bundled inside a single card. In 2012, an inspection of Dymaxion House revealed cracking in the floor beams, the result of thousands of visitors traipsing through it annually. “This meant we had to close the house to the public,” said Clara Deck, senior conservator at The Henry Ford.

With the war coming to an end, the U.S. was facing a serious housing crisis. These new houses needed to be constructed cheaply (a few dollars per square foot), quickly, and most importantly needed to be light enough to be shipped across the country en masse by airplane. The most common material in the Dymaxion House, and the one that poses the greatest conservation challenges, is aluminum. The lightweight material was used in every possible application, from the floor’s structure to the roof panels, even the closets.

Concepts and buildings

[3] The AIA did not share his dream of a replicable mass-produced housing system. Like his Lightful Towers concept, the 4D house was comprised of an elevated hexagonal structure surrounding a central umbrella-like mast supported by cables anchored to the ground. The structure weighed around 6000 lbs and was entered into by an elevator located in the mast. The walls of the structure were constructed from casein, a type of vegetable waste.

It then underwent an eight year restoration before going on display in 2001, and in 2013 another conservation project was started to maintain Fuller’s vision of a better designed world. Fuller never, however, resolved certain engineering challenges and abandoned the project. For decades, the architectural wonderments of Dymaxion were only iconic to architects and historians.

Daily updates on the latest design and architecture vacancies advertised on Dezeen Jobs. Fuller's interpretation of the rowing boat sees the vessel pared back to two streamlined and lightweight hulls, known as needles. The design positions the oarsman in an elevated seat, which can be accessed without any aid.

A crew was needed to dig the hole, sink the mast, and raise the frame, but after that, the rest of the house could be completed by a two person team in less than a day. The modular design meant that the interiors were incredibly customizable; with all of the utilities built into the mast, the homeowners were free to transform the interior living space to suit their needs on the fly. The painstaking process required close analysis of more than 3,600 parts related to Fuller’s design within The Henry Ford’s collection.

Innovator and thinker Buckminster Fuller had a vision for a future where housing would be affordable, sturdy, and self-sufficient. His prototype for this future was the Dymaxion House, part of his “dymaxion” line of inventions. Arguably the first Space Age designer, Buckminster Fuller imagined shining, aluminum, assembly line-produced suburbs. The circular house was designed to be easily transportable and shipped in a metal tube.

Domes up to three stories tall built with this method proved to be remarkably strong. Other shapes such as cones, pyramids, and arches proved equally adaptable. Over his career, Fuller designed a series of prefabricated residences called Dymaxion Houses – a term that merges the words dynamic, maximum, and tension.

By grouping all permanent utilities in the central pole, and letting the rest of the interior space remain modular, Fuller created a flexible plan that would allow tenants to transform the space according to their needs. The design also shows wind turbines on the roof and an extensive system of cisterns to collect and recycle water. For the bathing unit Fuller patented the “Dymaxion Bathroom” - a shower that required only one cup of hot water, and a toilet that consumed no water at all. R. Buckminster Fuller thought this house, which he called the Dymaxion House, was just what the American public wanted. Fuller, an engineer, philosopher and innovative designer, conceived the house in 1927 and partnered with the Beech Aircraft Corporation in Wichita, Kansas, to produce prototypes in 1945. Although Fuller designed his house so that it could be mass-produced, only one was ever built and lived in.

Forget Geodesic Domes, Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House Was His Masterpiece

Buckminster Fuller as the home of the future, the Dymaxion House was designed to be the strongest, lightest, and most cost-effective housing ever built. Over the last decade, it has assumed an iconic presence in Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Fuller developed three prototypes during his lifetime, but two have since been scrapped or damaged. In 2010, British architect Norman Foster – Fuller's friend, student and collaborator – built a replica of the car to replace one of the lost designs. Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal.[32] This building is now the "Montreal Biosphère".In 1962, the artist and searcher John McHale wrote the first monograph on Fuller, published by George Braziller in New York. For half of a century, Fuller developed many ideas, designs, and inventions, particularly regarding practical, inexpensive shelter and transportation.

Graham built the round house on his lake front property, disabling the ventilator and other interior features. It was inhabited for about 30 years, although as an extension to an existing ranch house, rather than a standalone structure as intended by Fuller. In 1990, the Graham family donated this house, and all the component prototyping parts, to the Henry Ford Museum.

Eight of Buckminster Fuller's most forward-thinking ideas

However, due to internal problems as well as Bucky's unwillingness to commercialize the design before he felt it was ready, the Dymaxion House never took off as a form of housing. The Dymaxion House prototype was eventually rescued and restored, and is now housed at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. During the prototyping process, the idea for the packaging toilet was quickly replaced by a conventional septic system because the packaging plastic was not available. Other features worked as advertised, notably the heating, and the passive air conditioning system, based on the "dome effect".

The Dymaxion House: A New Way of Living

Fuller adapted the principles for the Geodesic Dome from an earlier proposal, created by an engineer after the first world war, and then patented the design in the US in 1954. Today, there are 300,000 interpretations across the world, according to the Buckminster Fuller Institute. The "pods" or dividers between rooms allow little room for furniture to be placed up against them. They have interesting shelves and closets built into them so you don't need furniture taking up floor space. Working as a designer, scientist, developer, and writer, he continued to lecture for many years around the world. Instead of aluminum, the DDU’s were built with galvanized corrugated iron, the same materials used by the aircraft industry. Just as importantly, the DDU’s designed to be manufactured in the same plants pushing out fighter planes and bombers. Air Force immediately ordered 2000, and the British War Relief Society began to order units to be shipped overseas as emergency housing (though the DDU’s proved to be capable bomb shelters). By the time the first prototype was built, Fuller had managed to streamline the design, making the “Dymaxion” more stable, yet reducing the overall weight. The 1929 version weighed a total of 6000 lbs and provided over 1600 square feet of living space.

Fuller, R. Buckminster (Richard Buckminster), 1895-19831945

The entire exterior of the house was constructed of aluminum, one of the only materials Fuller decided met the aforementioned performance criteria he had set. Two Dymaxion houses were prototyped—one indoor (the "Barwise" house) and one outdoor (the "Danbury" house). No Dymaxion house built according to Fuller's intentions was ever constructed and lived in. The only two prototypes of the round, aluminum house were bought by investor William Graham, together with assorted unused prototyping elements as salvage after the venture failed. In 1948, Graham constructed a hybridized version of the Dymaxion house as his family's home; the Grahams lived there into the 1970s.

More thinker than capitalist, Fuller refused to sign off on a final production version. Always seeking improvement and innovation to the point of stalling the project completely, the persnickety inventor dealt his own dream a mortal blow. Bucky designed a home that was heated and cooled by natural means, that made its own power, was earthquake and storm-proof, and made of permanent, engineered materials that required no periodic painting, reroofing, or other maintenance. You could easily change the floor plan as required – squeezing the bedrooms to make the living room bigger for a party, for instance. The Dymaxion House uses tension suspension from a central mast, which appears in every room.

More an engineering solution than a home, the structure was prototyped but never produced. In 1920 Fuller wished to build a sustainable autonomous single family dwelling, the living machine of the future. Although never built, the Dymaxion's design displayed forward-thinking and influential innovations in prefabrication and sustainability. Not only would the house have been exemplary in its self-sufficiency, but it also could have been mass-produced, flat-packaged and shipped throughout the world. The final design of the Dymaxion house used a central vertical stainless-steel strut on a single foundation. Structures similar to the spokes of a bicycle-wheel hung down from this supporting the roof, while beams radiated out supported the floor.

Two Dymaxion houses were prototyped - one indoor (the "Barwise" house) and one outdoor (the "Danbury" house). In 1948, Graham constructed a hybridized version of the Dymaxion House as his family's home; the Grahams lived there into the 1970s. It was inhabited for about 30 years, although as an extension to an existing ranch house, rather than standing alone as intended by Fuller. In 1990, the Graham family donated this house, and all the component prototyping parts, to The Henry Ford Museum. One of his early models was first constructed in 1945 at Bennington College in Vermont, where he lectured often.

While some institutions would put such a rare artifact away for safekeeping or design a display that kept visitors at bay, The Henry Ford invested $1 million in a restoration project that would open the house to the public. Open as in visitors could walk through the front door, tour rooms and experience the domed dwelling from the inside out. The 100 sqm hexagonal house was an earthquake and storm resistant structure, supported by a central pole from which cables would be suspended, allowing the outer walls to be non-bearing.

Fuller's energy-efficient and inexpensive Dymaxion house garnered much interest, but only two prototypes were ever produced. Here the term "Dymaxion" is used in effect to signify a "radically strong and light tensegrity structure". One of Fuller's Dymaxion Houses is on display as a permanent exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Designed and developed during the mid-1940s, this prototype is a round structure (not a dome), shaped something like the flattened "bell" of certain jellyfish. It has several innovative features, including revolving dresser drawers, and a fine-mist shower that reduces water consumption.

The initial method used a circular concrete footing in which anchor posts were set. Tubes cut to length and with ends flattened were then bolted together to form a duodeca-rhombicahedron (22-sided hemisphere) geodesic structure with spans ranging to 60 feet (18 m). The form was then draped with layers of ¼-inch wire mesh attached by twist ties. Concrete was sprayed onto the structure, building up a solid layer which, when cured, would support additional concrete to be added by a variety of traditional means.

According to Fuller biographer Steve Crooks, the house was designed to be delivered in two cylindrical packages, with interior color panels available at local dealers. A circular structure at the top of the house was designed to rotate around a central mast to use natural winds for cooling and air circulation. Conceived nearly two decades earlier, and developed in Wichita, Kansas, the house was designed to be lightweight, adapted to windy climates, cheap to produce and easy to assemble. It looked ultramodern at the time, built of metal, and sheathed in polished aluminum. Due to publicity, there were many orders during the early Post-War years, but the company that Fuller and others had formed to produce the houses failed due to management problems. In 1928, Fuller’s ideas on housing came to fruition when he presented his design for the 4D Dymaxion house, a reference to the fourth dimension, to the American Insitute of Architects and was swiftly rejected.

All this would be possible now if houses were engineered, mass-produced, and sold like cars. The Dymaxion House was a futuristic dwelling invented by the architect and practical philosopher R. The word “Dymaxion,” which combines the words dynamic, maximum and tension, was coined (among many others) by Fuller himself. Since there was no evidence of the crucial internal rain-gutter system, some elements of the rain collecting system were omitted from the restored exhibit. The roof was designed to wick water inside and drip into the rain-gutter and then to the cistern, rather than have a difficult-to-fit, perfectly waterproof roof. For conducting offshore drilling, the Submersible is designed to be partially submerged underwater, to protect apparatus known as an oil derrick from damage caused by stormy weather.

It incorporated many of the safety and sustainability features of the original Dymaxion House, yet retained the simplicity and convenience of the Dymaxion Dwelling. Weighing in at a total of 3000 pounds (less than half of the original Dymaxion House) the 1200 square foot Wichita House came with two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, two Dymaxion bathrooms, laundry unit, and even a conveyor belt storage system. Fuller wouldn’t be content until his houses could produce their own power, dispose of their own waste, and provide the same level of comfort, regardless of geographic location.
